Attachment Methods - EIFS and EIFS with Drainage

EIFS/EIFS with Drainage systems are attached or fastened to the substrate with an adhesive, mechanical fasteners, or adhesive and mechanical fasteners. The recommended method(s) of system attachment is determined or set forth by the EIFS manufacturer based on a multitude of factors.

While mechanical fastening may be necessary or selected for certain applications, adhesive attachment is the commonly used method in part due to the ability to achieve high wind load resistance, performance with EIFS manufacturers fluid applied air/water resistive barriers and ease of attachment over substrates such as CMU, concrete, and heavy gauge steel. Below are examples of when it may be preferred or necessary to consider, add or incorporate mechanical fasteners to attach the system.

If the substrate is not suitable for adhesive attachment due to its condition (painted, unsound, etc.), incompatibility with certain water resistive barriers such as mechanically fastened sheet goods or sheathing panels with an integrated water resistive barrier face or if the assembly incorporates a drainage medium such as a mat or sheet between the water resistive barrier and insulation board that is not compatible with adhesive attachment.

Low/midrise, wood frame construction since mechanical fasteners can be installed in wood with relative ease and wind load requirements are often able to be achieved through mechanical attachment.

If the insulation board (CI) has low cohesive strength, facings, skins, etc. that are not suitable for adhesive or adhesive only attachment.

As a supplemental means of attachment to the adhesive method.

When recommended or required by the EIFS or component (insulation board, water resistive barrier, etc.) manufacturer
